We are a member of the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). Telemedicine is the delivery of health-related services and information using telecommunication technologies.

The Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) is one of the largest telemedicine networks in the world. OTN uses two-way videoconferencing to provide care for patients in hundreds of health care locations across Ontario. In addition to patient care, it enables distance education and meetings for health care professionals.

Telemedicine appointments are similar to an ordinary doctor’s appointment. You will be able to see and speak to the health care professional via a monitor. Patients with dermatology conditions may receive treatment through a Telederm appointment, in which digital photographs of your skin condition are forwarded electronically to a dermatologist who reviews them and provides a diagnosis and treatment path. There is no cost for care provided by telemedicine for patients with a valid Ontario Health card.

How can I get a Telemedicine appointment?

When a patient of the Powassan & Area Family Health Team is referred to a specialist by their primary health care provider, they may have the option of a telemedicine appointment. The Powassan & Area Family Health Team has a Registered Practical Nurse that schedules, manages and supports these appointments.

Get Checked for Cancer

Cancer screening can find abnormal cell changes before they become cancer or cancer at an early stage, when treatment has a better chance of working. Cancer screening is for people who do not have any cancer symptoms.

Our cancer screening services include:

  • Breast Cancer Screening (mammogram)
  • Cervical Cancer Screening (HPV screen)
  • Colorectal Cancer Screening (FIT test)

Please visit Cancer Care Ontario for more details.

Breast

Regular breast cancer screening can find cancer when it is small and treatment has a better chance of working.

Cervical

Cervical cancer can almost always be prevented with regular cervical screening, appropriate and timely follow-up of abnormal cervical screening test result and getting the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

We offer cervical cancer screening clinics for people who do not have a primary care provider. Please watch our website events page and Facebook page for the next screening clinic.

Ontario has a new cervical screening test that is better at helping prevent cervical cancer! This new test replaces the Pap test because it is better at preventing cervical cancer. It checks for types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can cause cervical cancer.

HPV is a virus that can cause cell changes in the cervix. These changes can turn into cervical cancer over time if they are not treated.

Most people only need the test every 5 years, and it is available for people with a cervix aged 25-70 who have ever been sexually active. Talk to your primary care provider, or visit ontariohealth.ca/cervical-test to learn more.

Colorectal

When colorectal cancer is caught early enough through screening, someone with the disease has a 9 out of 10 chance of being cured.

Lung

Screening can find some lung cancers early, when treatment has a better chance of working.

Many people will experience a mental health-related problem or mental illness at some point in their lives. The Powassan & Area Family Health Team has Mental Health Clinicians to assist people at these times. These Mental Health Services are available to people of all ages, including children, teens, adults and seniors. The Powassan & Area Family Health Team continues to build links to other Mental Health Clinicians in the community to provide you the best care available.

Family doctors may make referrals to the Mental Health Clinicians when individuals are experiencing new symptoms such as anxiety or depression, or when they are having difficulty coping with recent life events. The Mental Health Clinicians operate in conjunction with the Family Physicians using a shared care model and information is shared between the Physicians and the Mental Health Clinicians.

Patients can also be referred to the Mental Health Clinicians for counselling. Most often the referral is to help the patient deal with immediate problems they may be experiencing. Counselling focuses on helping change the way patients deal with troubling thoughts or fears. Patients may have up to six or eight sessions of therapy to work towards achieving goals that the patient and counsellor set together.

Our clinics are networked through the use of electronic medical records instead of traditional paper charts. These records are stored and protected in our computer system. Ultimately, this means better communication between all members of the Family Health Team. It will also allow your medical records to be easily accessible and securely shared with specialists, hospitals and other health care providers as needed.

No matter where you are or who you are seeing at the four sites affiliated with the Powassan & Area Family Health Team, that health care provider will have up-to-date information concerning your medical history, current medications and recent test results.

We are offering flu shots at our clinics. Please watch our website and Facebook page starting in Oct or November for clinic dates or call the office to book.

If you have already had your flu shot elsewhere, please let us know by filling out this form - thank you!
